Friday @ 5: A cocktail to kick off the weekend

Posted by Lauren Viera

The past few days’ warmer climes are a dead giveaway, but for those who prefer to celebrate by the book: Spring officially begins Sunday.

(If you’re annoyed by the fact that this column so often begins with a reminder as to what holiday or season is on the horizon, apologies. Let it be your constant reminder to drink in season, just as you should eat in season.)

More important than the fact that yesterday was St. Patrick’s Day, or that a certain day this year marks the 244th anniversary of the invention of soda water, the start of spring gives us permission to polish off our brown liquors and move into lighter territory (think gin, tequila, light rum). True, bourbon remains an excellent transitional spirit to be enjoyed in the months warming up to Derby Day in early May, but toasting the equinox deserves a bit more effort.

That said, go out. Yes, this column primarily encourages staying in and trying your hand at drink recipes. This weekend, go out. Yes, in the rain. (It’s part of spring, after all.) Sit somewhere with windows that have the capacity to open up to the elements, even if it’s too cold to do it just yet. Allow yourself to daydream about temperatures that reach into the 60s. No — the 70s. We’re almost there, folks.

This is the cocktail you should drink while you’re waiting: The Soiled Dove at Bangers & Lace (1670 W. Division St., 773.252.6499).

Comprised of silver tequila, dry sherry, agave, lime and grapefruit juice, it’s served in a Collins glass with ice (it’s been a long time since you had a tall drink, no?) and is finished with bitters and black salt. As for that added salt: Don’t let the mention of it conjure images of rock salt-strewn sidewalks. We’re past that now.

Armortech & Atelier Valdeig Tresor

Russian tuner, Armortech, and its German contemporary, Atelier Valdeig have joined forces to introduce a new luxury SUV.

The vehicle is called the Tresor, which in French translates to “treasure.” It’s based on the Audi Q7 and comes with plenty of styling cues from two of the most high-end brands on the planet: Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The front end of the Tresor actually looks a lot like a Bentley and if you really think about it, you could make a case that this is what the Bentley EXP 9 F should have looked like in the first place.

Whereas the exterior doesn’t do a whole lot to stir anyone’s imagination, the interior of the Tresor is a different picture altogether. With the help of Bentley, Armortech and Atelier Valdeig gave the Tresor’s interior plenty of elegantly appointed high-end components, including a full-on leather upholstery, premium wood trim, and plenty of metallic accents. If all these aren’t enough, the builders are offering bespoke options to customers, which include a number of additions, highlighted by interior partitions – for privacy’s sake – and high-tech entertainment systems.

Since the car is based on the Q7, the powertrain options follow as such. With a choice of a variety of engines, including an Audi-sourced V12 TDI that produces 500 horsepower and 737 lb/ft of torque, customers will have plenty of say on how their Tresor SUV performs and looks.

No word yet on when the Armortech & Atelier Valdeig Tresor will hit the market, but you can expect to hear more about it in the coming months.

Armortech & Atelier Valdeig Tresor originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 17 May 2012 12:00 EST.

Donald Cerrone vs. Jeremy Stephens Fight Video Highlights

May 16, 2012 – Relieve last night’s heated grudge match with Donald Cerrone vs. Jeremy Stephens fight highlights, brought to you by FOX Sports.

UFC on FUEL 3 was held on May 15, 2012, at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. Brash lightweight contender Donald Cerrone (18-4, 1 NC) looked to rebound from his first UFC loss by taking on veteran bruiser Jeremy Stephens (20-8) on the night’s main card. Check out the video highlights below.

For more on Cerrone’s bounce-back win, check out the play-by-play from MMA Fighting’s own Ben Fowlkes.

Round 1: Stephens goes to work with leg kicks, trying to get in close to land the big right early on. Cerrone seems like he’s still getting loose out there. Good combo by Cerrone makes Stephens cover up, and Cerrone finishes with a chopping leg kick. Cerrone is doing a good job of staying out of Stephens’ range, then rushing in all at once and attacking while Stephens is on the defensive. After one such combo, Stephens shows blood around his left eye. Jumping knee by Cerrone, but Stephens defends well. Stephens seems off-balance and unsure as the round winds down. He’s too busy reacting to generate much of an attack. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Cerrone.

Round 2: Cerrone seems to be only gaining in confidence as this one wears on. He mixes up the kicks and punches, throws in a spinning elbow, and it seems as if he can hit with Stephens with whatever he wants. An uppercut by Cerrone stings Stephens. He throws in a little samba as Stephens watches uncertainly. Stephens covers up after a Cerrone feint, and Cerrone looks like he’s just trying to entertain himself in an easy sparring session. Stephens comes back with a one-two, throwing hard still, but he just can’t get going. Cerrone dances in and chops Stephens down with another leg kick. Takedown by Cerrone in the final minute, just to be sure the round is his, and it is. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Cerrone.

Round 3: Inside leg kick by Cerrone to start the third sneaks up into Stephens’ groin. That’s a hard one, and even Cerrone knows it right away. Stephens is going to take a moment, while Cerrone has the cut on the top of his head from a Stephens elbow at the end of the second tended to. Stephens is feeling better, and Cerrone apologizes as they restart. Cerrone ducks under a combo and tries a takedown, but can’t finish. Stephens is bleeding from the eye and the nose, but still coming forward. Another chopping leg kick by Cerrone, and it takes Stephens’ leg out from under him. Cerrone keeps on picking away at Stephens. He’s not exactly going all out to end it, but neither is he showing much mercy on a battered Stephens, who looks as if he can barely see out of his cut and swollen left eye. Final minute, and Stephens shows that he still has that right hand in reserve, not that he can get close enough to land it. Flying knee attempt by Stephens, but Cerrone ducks under and makes it to the final horn. MMA Fighting scores it 10-9 for Cerrone.

UFC on FUEL 3 results: Donald Cerrone def. Jeremy Stephens via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione by Wheelsandmore

The past few days have been chalk full of tuning programs from German tuner Wheelsandmore, and now they are adding another one in the mix. The first package was called the Lamborghini Aventador “Rabbioso”, which was then followed by the Ferrari 458 Perfetto. Now, the third package is based on an even more impressive sports car: the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.

As usual, the package includes a cool exterior kit, as well as two stages of engine upgrades. The first stage takes the power up to 470 HP, from the standard 450 HP, with the use of an ECU upgrade. Total price for this upgrade is 1680 euro ($2,138 at the current rates). The second stage goes even further to 485 HP. This stage includes an ECU upgrade and a handcrafted stainless steel exhaust system with remote-able valve flaps. The price for this upgrade is 6720 euro ($8,552 at the current rates).

The exterior kit starts with a new set of 21″ ultralight forged wheels, but the tuner is also offering unlimited color and surface finishes as well as an upgraded carbon look design with white outliner and inlays.

$22 lunches, $33 dinners at Chicago Chef Week

Posted by Phil Vettel

Ready for another week of affordable, multi-course meals at top Chicago restaurants?

Heck, yeah.

Chicago Chef Week is underway, running through Saturday, during which some 52 restaurants will feature three-course lunches for $22 and three-course dinners for $33.

It sounds a bit like Chicago Restaurant Week, doesn’t it? Same prices, and indeed, some of the same restaurants. This week is a bit shorter and has far fewer participants, but you’ll still be able to dine at the likes of Avec, Big Jones, Bistronomic, Boka, C-House, Cibo Matto, Green Zebra, Hearty, Mana Food Bar, MK, Nana, Nightwood, Perennial, Sable, Sepia, Sola, Terzo Piano, Veerasway and Zealous.

You can find all the participating restaurants, and make online reservations, at the Chicago Chef Week website. Clicking on individual restaurants will link you to their respective sites, but as of this morning, very few had bothered to post their Chicago Chef Week menus. Think of it as the thrill of anticipation.
